I found out who wrote it...
"The Thick of Life"
I would be always in the thick of life
Threading its mazes,
sharing its strife,
Yet - somehow singing!

So two of my non-art friends popped in for tea today... We sat on my very civilised veranda and chatted away whilst admiring the view... On the way out they popped into my studio... Rather than gasp in admiration of the many artworks lying around, they expressed horror at the dirt and mess of my studio... Hmmm... Paint is not dirt - and what is painting if not making a glorious mess? I always promise myself that when I open a new tube of paint, that this time I will use the lid... Epic fail... I'm like one of those drunken people who, whilst dancing naked on the table, rips open a bottle of booze with their teeth, and throws away the lid... Except I don't drink. And I don't paint naked.. But I do profess to using my teeth when unscrewing paint tubes... I've always loved this quote... Thelma Buzzard, my old watercolour teacher, gave it to me many years ago as she said she thought of me immediately when she read it... That must have been 1998-ish? I have tried to live up to it...
